JOHN HATCHER MEETS THE DEVIL This audio cassette tape is mountain man tall tale, which was first published in 1850. John Hatcher, a rocky mountain fur trapper, was known for his ability to 'spin a yarn'. In 1847 he told this story, of how he met the Devil beneath the Spanish Peaks, to the seventeen-year-old Lewis Garrard. Garrard was so taken by Hatcher's story that he wrote it down in his journal. In 1850, Garrard's journal was published. Les Vilda, a storyteller and Living Historian from Nebraska, reads the story as Lewis Garrard wrote it in 1850, but as John Hatcher may have told it.
